Peter Saville and Jon Savage in Conversation
FAC 1, Poster 1978. Design Peter Saville

To coincide with the Chelsea Space exhibition Use Hearing Protection: FAC 1 – 50 / 40, co-founder and art director of Factory Peter Saville will be in conversation with author, film-maker and archivist Jon Savage, one of the curators of the show.

Following the talk, there will be a screening of Joy Division live at the Apollo Theatre in Manchester in October 1979, while on tour supporting the Buzzcocks. This is one of the two nights videotaped by Richard Boon, with part of the footage featured on the Here Are The Young Men video (Fact 37).

Curated by Jon Savage and Mat Bancroft, Use Hearing Protection: FAC 1 – 50 / 40 tells the story of Factory’s formative years from 1978 to 1982 through the first 50 numbered Factory artefacts, including works by Peter Saville, Joy Division, New Order, A Certain Ratio, Durutti Column and Linder Sterling.

Tickets are free but booking is essential.

Peter Saville’s images have permeated contemporary culture. As co-founder and art director of the legendary independent label Factory Records he was instrumental in bringing the tropes of high modernist culture to a mass audience who would never otherwise have engaged with avant-garde imagery. His radical designs, most notably for Joy Division and New Order, seemed to break all the rules, omitting information about artists or titles, fundamentally questioning modes of consumption and communication. His recent work encompasses design, art and culture.

Jon Savage is the author of England’s Dreaming: Sex Pistols and Punk Rock, Teenage: The Creation of Youth 1875-1945, 1966: The Year the Decade Exploded, and This Searing Light: The Oral History of Joy Division. He has also written several films, including Punk and the Pistols (Arena 1998), Teenage (2013) and 1966: Fifty Years Ago Today (Arena). He also works as a Curator and an Archivist.
