Join us in the gallery for a talk that will expand on some of the contexts attached to Ian Stephenson's work as an artist and an educator, including his work as a 'studio demonstrator' on the Basic Design course, a frequently evoked training course for art students developed in the 1950s. A renowned painter, Stephenson taught for a several decades at Chelsea College of Arts, shaping the careers of many students, including, Christopher Le Brun PRA, Patrick Caulfield, Helen Chadwick, Rita Donagh.

Elena Crippa is Curator, Modern and Contemporary British Art at Tate, where she contributes to the research, display, exhibition and acquisition of artworks from the twentieth and twentieth-first century, with a focus on the period 1940–80. She was awarded her PhD in 2013 from Birkbeck and the London Consortium, conducting her doctoral research as part of the Leverhulme-funded Tate Research project ‘Art School Educated’ (2009-14).

Chris Yetton taught art history at the Chelsea College of Arts. His writings include books on John Carter and Monet in the 20th Century and essays on Ian Stephenson, John McLean, David Hepher and Carol Robertson. Yetton taught with Ian Stephenson at Chelsea from 1963-89.


The talk starts at 3pm, refreshments will be served.
