Neue Slowenische Kunst took its name from the title of a special 1929 edition of the German art journal Der Sturm which dedicated an issue to “Junge Slovenische Kunst” (Young Slovene Art). The issue presented a selection of works by Slovene avant-garde artists, architects, composers and poets. From the mid-1980s onwards there was a critical rediscovery of the work of these 1920s artists, initially in Slovenia and then beyond. Perhaps the key factor in this process was the use of their works by their 1980s successors Neue Slowenische Kunst.
